"A body of related works that demonstrate sustained and thoughtful investigation of a specific visual idea."
My concentration sprouted from a four-piece project. I was assigned to choose an instrumental song and create a painting directly inspired by it. I chose the song “Life and Death” by Paul Cardall. The beginning of the song sounded very sad to me. Every time I heard the song it made me think of the struggles of people around the world, and the fact that they’re issues are ignored by the majority of the world. Then there was a point in the song when the music changes. When it changes I started to hear a more hopeful undertone to its sad sound. The point in the song when the music suddenly crescendos. This part represents the change, the change that those who are suffering are hoping for. I tried to visually portray this concept of people around the world struggling to be heard and their road to change. I tried to show how their pleas are all too often falling on deaf ears.
The colors I chose are relatively light and hopeful to show the optimistic undertone of the song, and to make my pieces inspire change instead of being completely oppressive and sad. My first and final pieces really sum up what I aim for my concentration to show. My concentration shows the unplanned struggles of the world. I chose to end with the pieces titled, “Who Will” (image 11) and “The Last Line” (image 12) to leave us with the hopeful thought that we can do something to fix the inevitable pain and struggle in our world, and to motivate us to make the change.
